About Mr. Sorrento's Pizza
In the summer of 1967, my father
Vincent, along with his brother, Joe, opened a pizza shop in downtown
Harrisburg, PA. 406 Market Street was the address of the first Sorrento's
Pizzaria.
The shop was located in the middle of a large block long building
also housing the Governor Hotel on the floors above. It was the first
pizza shop in Harrisburg and curiosity brought all capital and state
workers downtown for a piece of the "Tomato Pie" at 25 cents a slice.
Business was great and my father quickly expanded to a second shop on
the
1800 block of Derry Street where dinner trade was very good. My
father stayed with this
shop until May of 1976.
In the late spring of 1976, my father retired to Italy but
we weren't comfortable there. So, within 10 years, we left and came back to America.
The pizza shop is titled after a town in Italy located about 45 minutes from
Naples on the waterfront. Although my family name is not Sorrento, not many people
knew this and called my father "Mr. Sorrento." When we came back to America,
we named the shop Mr. Sorrento's Pizza. I thought the chocolate factory would
supply a part of the business, only to my surprise, it supplied 85% of our
lunch customers!
After 19 years of business in Hershey, I consider myself part
of the Hershey Family. I had the pleasure of seeing young children come to the
pizza shop ten years ago and those same kids are now visiting the shop as Mommies
and Daddies with their own children. I look forward to serving you and your family
a slice of the "Tomato Pie." - Mr.
Pete Sorrento
